Sterin Alexander Markovich

 

Full name: Sterin Alexander Markovich

Born January 12, 1948 in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. Married, has two daughters.

Graduated with honors from Dnepropetrovsk State University, Physics Department, in 1970. Candidate of Technical Sciences (1979, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT)). Senior Researcher (1993). Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (2004, A.I. Voeikov Main Geophysical Observatory).

He has been working in the Hydrometeorological Service since 1980 at the All-Russian (formerly All-Union) Research Institute for Hydrometeorological Information — World Data Center (FGBU "VNIIGMI-MCD"). From January 2018 to the present - Chief Researcher, Acting Deputy Director for Research.

List of scientific interests of his work includes issues of climatological processing and analysis of hydrometeorological data, monitoring and research of climate and its changes over the period of instrumental observations, issues of application of new and traditional mathematical and statistical methods and modern computing technology for these purposes, assessment of damages in monetary terms from dangerous and adverse meteorological phenomena for the territory of the Russian Federation, preparation of hydrometeorological and climate safety passports.

A.M. Sterin has more than 160 publications, including those in leading international, domestic and foreign journals and conference proceedings. He is a permanent co-author of the "Report on the Features of the Climate in the Territory of the Russian Federation" annually published by Roshydromet. He is a member of the editorial boards of the journals "Fundamental and Applied Climatology" (since 2024 - Deputy Editor-in-Chief), "Hydrometeorology and Education". He is a member of the problem scientific council of Roshydromet in the direction of "Research of climate, its changes and their consequences. Assessment of the hydrometeorological regime and climatic resources." Member of the Dissertation Council 26.1.002.01 based at the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Hydrometeorological Research Center of the Russian Federation".

For several years, he has successfully combined scientific and scientific-organizational activities with teaching, teaching as a professor at the Obninsk Institute of Atomic Energy (IATE) of the National Research Nuclear University "MEPhI" (NRNU MEPhI)

Awarded the badge "Honorary Worker of the Hydrometeorological Service of Russia" (1998). Bears the honorary title "Honored Meteorologist of the Russian Federation". In 2022, he was awarded the medal of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" II degree.
